Gaza Before the Law is a film that explores a lawsuit filed in 2014 against the US Government by Akram Abusharar, a Palestinian American lawyer based in Orange County, California. The lawsuit claims US military support of Israel violates the Leahy Amendment to the Foreign Assistance Act, a 1961 law which bars the US from giving military aid to any country that commits human rights violations. Gaza Before the Law intercuts footage of Gaza filmed by Abusharar after the 2014 Israeli siege with notes from the hearing and scenes from Abusharar’s law practice in Orange County. The case was dismissed by US Federal Court. Gaza Before the Law deals with the limits to law in matters of politics and how the violence of war and occupation is experienced from the Palestinian diaspora.
